Our Stories

Our Leaders

City Church values team-based ministry and servant leadership. Our leadership team guides the church and is responsible for the pastoral care of our community. Our Community Groups (CGs) and Ministries are led by men and women committed to learning to live like Jesus and helping others do the same. Meet some of our leaders below!

  • David & Betsy

    LEADERSHIP TEAM & CG LEADERS

We met at Boston University in 2004 and have been involved in ministering to both those in and outside the church ever since. We’ve had the joy of planting a church, opening Neighborhoods Cafe, and helping found the Fenway Community Center. We love our four children and finding ways to serve this diverse city together with them.

  • Abigail & Paul

    LEADERSHIP TEAM & CG LEADERS

As an Englishman and an American who met in South Africa, we love the adventure of being part of God's big family! We enjoy bringing that sense of family to others as together we learn to live like our big brother Jesus. We have five children who love being part of this church family too!

  • Israel & Keerthana

    COMMUNITY GROUP (CG) LEADERS

It gives us comfort knowing that the God of this universe always welcomes us with open arms, even though we are un-deserving of His love. We love serving the Lord through meeting new people, opening up our home to others, sharing testimonies & discovering new ways of worshiping God together.

  • Mark

    COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT DIRECTOR

In His love, God called me out of darkness and restored me to life. I want to live a life of gratitude and learn to be a faithful witness to His steadfast love, compassion and mercy. I'm very curious and enjoy a great many things, especially cooking, science fiction, and growing vegetables. I love listening to and connecting deeply with people.

David W. Hill - Lead Pastor (Elder)

David W. Hill leads City Church’s leadership team and serves as the pastor and primary preacher for City Church. Raised in Boston, he has a unique vision to help others live like Jesus. He and his wife, Betsy, formed the team that planted City Church. They have four children and live in Hyde Park.

Paul McFarthing - Elder

Paul coaches community group leaders, provides pastoral care for members, teaches and mentors, and lives in Brighton with his wife, Abigail, and their five children.

OUR Values

  • Spirit & Truth

We believe in both the work and gifts of the Holy Spirit today and in the final authority of Scripture.

  • Trinity & Community

We are included in the love that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have for each other. That means church is a family and a team where every member contributes.

  • Grace & Lordship

We accept one another on the basis of Christ’s grace not performance and help each other follow Jesus.

  • Local & Global

We have a mission to share the gospel with and serve all people both locally and globally.

Part of A Global Movement

We are a part of a global family of churches called Newfrontiers. Newfrontiers is a growing group of apostolic leaders partnering together on global mission, joined by common values and beliefs, shared mission and genuine relationships. Newfrontiers was founded in the UK by Terry Virgo and today it consists of over 20000 churches, working in different spheres in over 70 nations.

In the United States, we partner with a Newfrontiers sphere of around 30+ churches that identify as Confluence Churches. For more information go to Confluencechurches.org.

Together we are on a mission to make disciples, train leaders, start churches, practice New Testament church life, and reach nations.  Newfrontiers emphasizes a vibrant life in the Spirit, Bible-based theology, the grace of God, and team based ministry.

Confluence Churches in Boston include Abundant Grace Church and our own.

Regions Beyond

City Church Boston is also committed to seeing churches planted beyond on our own city particularly in regions where people have not had an opportunity to hear the story of Jesus.  We currently have teams of people living like Jesus from our church in two cities in the Middle East and are working with Confluence Northeast on other global missions’ opportunities.

OUR History

Following God in Boston & Beyond

City Church was birthed out of a desire to see students and young professionals, who come from all over the world to study and work in Boston, meet Jesus.  We started out as a community group of three people in a living room in 2005.  In October of 2008, a core team of 20 people (many of whom were college students) launched “Fenway Church” with Sunday meetings at Church Restaurant and Club.  We grew as people that had never experienced God in a real way encountered Jesus for the first time.

In August 2013, we started a Sunday location in Allston at the Brighton Music Hall as God began to speak to us about adopting a vision for neighborhoods across the city of Boston not just the Fenway.  In 2014, we changed our name to City Church Boston to reflect this vision.

Throughout this journey, we have been a community that is committed to helping each other live like Jesus AND are real about our lives and our journeys. We are far from perfect and are not afraid of hard questions.  In fact, we ask lots of them.  We don't just meet at a venue on Sundays but in community groups during the week where we learn to help each other to live like Jesus in our neighborhoods and world.

In attempt to live like Jesus, we’ve followed his promptings to volunteer at various neighborhood non-profits across our city, serve in some of the most poverty stricken and dangerous countries in the world, and minister on college campuses.  We now have members living and ministering in several major Middle Eastern cities.

We've found that as we follow Jesus on his mission, we are empowered by His Spirit and joined with others on an incredible journey of redemption.  You are welcome to join City Church as its story continues to unfold.
